A Piece Of Time

by Ricardo
(U.S.A.)

A piece of time was all he asked. I did not have the time, or better yet, did not want to take the time. Too many other "more important things to do" with my time. Well, as time went on in my own life, time also went on in his.

The next thing I knew was that he had grown up and now did not have time for me!

All he asked for was a little time. I did not have the time, or better yet, did not want to take the time. To many other "more important things to do" with my time.

Well, as time went on in my own life, time also went on in his, and he became old and frail, and eventually died....... a piece of time was all they asked.

Wendy: Just had to add this video of Harry Chapin's song ... so perfect and so sad too. If you've never listened to the words, listen now - so true in so many families!

The Essence Of Love
by: Ricardo

The essence of her embrace, the lingering of her scent...the warmth of her body close to his....is this love? The years have past, they are older now and greyed. Yet somehow they try to hold on to the essence of love....memories fade and become diluted with time, yet they cling to this essence of love....cling to life, cling to love, cling that essence of love!

Children scattered across the USA
by: Irwin

Hi All:

It is hard once we retire to make it a point to see our children when they are scattered across the country as many are.

While we are still physically fit (in our 70s at the moment) we make it a point to travel to see them. We are in Florida and one is in CT and the other in CA and the youngest here in FL about twenty or so minutes away.

I know the time will come that we won't be able to travel (leastways driving) but until that time comes, we make it a point to see them each twice a year.

Hopefully when we stop driving they will come see us at least once a year. That is all one can hope for when they are scattered around the country such as many are.

No Time Left for You
by: Joe W.

Ricardo,

Hi! i think that Society today is more focused on jobs and job responsibilities that are usually located a long distance from their parents homes.

Also, it seems that many kids are growing up too fast, and want to be independent adults before they are ready. I have also seen the dark side where a woman has a health problem but hasn't seen her four grown-up Sons for years. This would be understandable if they all lived in distant locations but everybody lives in the same City. Ouch!

On the other hand, I see children visiting their parents not every day but at least once a week.

In my Province of Alberta in Canada you might be familiar with the Oilsands in Northern Alberta. Anyways, there are workers there from Newfoundland, Canada on the East Coast that fly across Canada to get back to their families on their work breaks.

Wendy:When I still worked with retirees, the majority, by far, had kids working out of state. They'd tell me how they'll visit family after family all over the USA. I always thought it was sad... families split all over due to employment, no more holidays celebrated together, cousins growing up hardly knowing each other. I still wonder how the retirees dealt with it later.. early on, feeling fit, they can travel and visit the kids families. Later, what happens?

Quite appropriate for the times today
by: Irwin Lengel

Ricardo:

Loved your piece of writing - it seems so appropriate for the times we are going through right now.

But then, sometimes I wonder if those we think should be paying more attention to us are just too busy keeping their own houses in order. That is one side of the coin - but then the other side of the coin is just what your piece is all about - if not now when? We wait too long and it will be too late.

Thanks for sharing,
Irwin

And Wendy - the song was just the right one for this article by Ricardo.
