Dementia

One of my best friends has got dementia recently. I am shocked to see him being quite a different person.

I am very afraid of having dementia myself. So I have decided to do something to prevent it.

There are three things I am doing now.

(1) Learning a foreign language (English in my case). They say that few bilinguals have dementia.

(2) Singing songs. I usually sing oldies on karaoke.

(3) Playing ‘igo’ a board game. This needs hard thinking.

I hope I can prevent dementia as much as possible by doing these three things.

Hi, Margaret!

Thank you very much for your comment on my post dementia.

You suggested to me cutting out refined carbs. I am trying to avoid refined rice as much as possible.

Thank you for your suggestion.

I think dementia is the scariest threat when facing old age. I recognize the value of brain-gym when you are older, but I have also heard, and research seems to be backing this up, that nutrition is also important. Cut out all refined carbs and get diabetes or syndrome X well under control and keep it there, and you have a better chance of delaying brain-deterioration for a bit longer. And physical exercise is important too.

Maybe add a long-term meaningful project where you have an opportunity to create something. My choice is the Seniorpreneur Project ongoing since 2006. I think that your English Second Language (ESL) is an excellent choice for you because you will need to communicate in English more especially on the Internet.
