FIGHTING DEPRESSION

by RUTHIE
(TORONTO, CANADA)

MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY IN 2007 AND APPROXIMATELY 1 1/2 YEARS LATER I WAS IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND WAS UNABLE TO WORK AND WAS FORCED INTO RETIREMENT.

THIS WAS A DOUBLE WAMMY FOR ME BECAUSE I WAS USED TO CARING FOR MY HUSBAND AND AFTER HIS PASSING WAS LEFT ALONE. I AM ABLE TO GET AROUND A BIT BUT I REQUIRE A WALKER THEREFORE MY MOBILITY IS LIMITED.

I HAVE BEEN IN AND OUT OF DEPRESSION EVER SINCE.

I TRIED VOLUNTEERING BUT MY PROGRAM WAS CANCELLED.
I WISH I COULD RETURN TO WORK BECAUSE I SEEM TO HAVE TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS.

THANK HEAVENS FOR MY WONDERFUL DAUGHTER WHO RUNS ERRANDS FOR ME AND CALLS ME ALMOST EVERY DAY. I ALSO HAVE A RETIREMENT BUDDY WHO RETIRED THE SAME TIME AS ME. WE HAVE BECOME CLOSE.

BUT MY MORAL IS NOT THE SAME. I NEED TO FEEL USEFUL.

Depression can be managed with anti-depressants.
by: Anonymous

I was given an anti-depressant for menopausal hot flashes. They didn't help so much with the hot flashes but they turned my life around.

I didn't know how depressed I was until I started feeling like I crawled out of a black hole. I was depressed for years due to my husband becoming disabled from an accident and it turned our life upside down overnight. It kept getting worse, then my Dad died 3 months after the accident and my husband's Dad died a year later.

My husband fights depression too with anti-depressants. He swears that without them he wouldn't be here. If you talk to your doctor and tell them how you're feeling they should prescribe something for your depression. It's good to talk with someone too to get your feelings out.

Good Luck

Isn't it great that your daughter and "retirement buddy" are finding ways to help you. They might not have had the chance otherwise. It's only through helping others that we can realize and appreciate our own good fortune. Who can YOU help in return? Even a smile can brighten someone's day.
