For their country they left their homes,
all their families left alone.
To a far-off country, they were sent,
to lands unknown, and still, they went.
Through desert and swamp, they bravely trod, travelling hard that lonely road.
Always alert for the slightest danger,
to bullets and mines they were no stranger.
Fatigue and illness they had to bear,
fearful and watching the land and the air.
At last, the sound of warfare ceased
and their homeland beckoned for sweet release.
And so they went into arms so kind,
remembering those who were left behind.
