My wife and I are young retirees. She is 61 and I am 62. We are fortunate to have been able to pay off our mortgage so it's inexpensive to live here.
Prior to our retirement we discussed selling our home and moving to a more remote area. The main reason for doing this was because we didn't think we would be able to pay off our mortgage and with the mortgage we couldn't afford to retire.
We had a lot of equity so our plan was to sell and buy what could afford to pay cash for in a more rural area.
Fortunately, the small company I worked for sold out to a much larger company. When this occurred my company paid out a very large thank you for your loyalty bonus. With that money we were able to pay off the mortgage. We are very grateful for that.
Since both of our daughters live nearby, staying in our home is the best solution for now. Our home does require a fair amount of maintenance and I know there will come a time when we can't keep it up. We definitely cannot afford to hire someone to do it for us.
So, the day will come when we will have to move. I dread that day but maybe when it's time it won't be so bad.
